I was a sergeant in the US Army stationed in Uijongbu, Korea, about 30 miles from the DMZ and the same distance from Seoul, in 1958-1959. Seoul was still pretty leveled by the Korean War. I could drive across Seoul in 30 minutes in a 2 1/2 ton Army truck. Seoul was back then a sprawling city that had been leveled by the fighting. Today it is 20 million residents, inconceivable to me. Soldiers who like me could speak Korean were mostly stationed up closer to the line, about 30 miles South.
