Like the Albert Brooks movie, Lost in America, I am lost in America, Donald Trump's America. Each day, as we wait for the Mueller report, we get another flash headline, this time about Donald Trump, Jr., and two others take a meeting with a Russian lawyer 'close to the Kremlin who promises dirt on Hillary's emails. Jeez.
In the midst of all this Trump continues to claim that he has become more presidential than any other president except perhaps Lincoln and FDR. He evens fantasizes about Mt. Rushmore.
Why is the Mueller Report taking so long? Actually it hasn't been that long since Special Councillor Mueller was appointed; it just seems like an eternity.
And like the Julie Haggerty character in Lost in America, who tells her husband the very first night in in Las Vegas that she's lost all the money they own at the crap tables, I feel like we are losing all of our future by the president who knows nothing about politics or the presidency or, for that the America I do live in. Trump does know that large regions of America live in resentment against the changes for women, gays, transsexuals, blacks and immigrants.
Trump supporters live in the swamp of resentment that poisons so much of American life. Trump doesn't want to drain that swamp.
We must resist the future that might be looming. We are too quickly losing all the money and faith we have in the promise of the American democracy.
I am like the many Americans who see that Trump is a fool and a charlatan, a man with serious psychological debilities.
He lies constantly but seldom recognizes the enormity of his lies. This is a man who says he won the election despite the Electoral College being stacked toward the Democrats. He says, "Everybody knows this." This is nothing but bullshit. Only a president who is aggressively ignorant of the our American democracy and its history can say this.
And only a man who is psychologically damaged by a crippling narcism can continue this insanity despite the growing signs around him that even his own party is alarmed
He peddles this bullshit and no one in the GOP dares to confront him in public. No one in the GOP says , in public, the very opposite of what the president is saying is true. The danger is not just the parts of the South permanently locked in resentment; the danger is that this resentment is spreading to other states and region. (To see more about the modern South, everyone needs to read Egerton's The Americanization of Dixie and the Southernization of America, written decades ago.)
Talk about alternative facts. The majority is held captive to a Southernized America that can't get over the loss of white privilege. Obamacare is being dismantled by the Majority Leader Senator Mitch McConnell, (R. Kentucky), and for whom the press never notes that Kentucky is doing quite well with Obamacare. I don't think anyone in the media has ever called Trump on this. Maybe the media prefers endless attention to the latest drama of another vote to repeal Obama.
Today's religious right is more about peddling fear of the other than about religion as forging ties that bind us together.
Has anyone offered any reasonable argument for repealing Obamacare so as to remedy its faults? Why not rename and improve Obamacare and call it "TrumpCare" to honor our national idiot? Is it because the GOP can't turn away from the politics of fear as their foundational political appeal?
Meanwhile, as more bullshit is sold as news we risk losing our faith in our imperiled American democracy.
