Why is Bernie Sanders touting "single payer" or "busting up the banks" at this juncture of his political career?
Is it possible that he is seeking to undermine Hillary Clinton's appeal to young progressives by dangling the prospect of a true "single payer" to control health spending, even if the chance of that happening anytime soon is close to zero.
Most Americans, much less young progressive Americans, may wish to see a single payer system like Canada's to take shape here in the United States. Who doubts that this would be better than what we have now, a health care system that weakens or undermines the federal government's buying powers as a monopsony?
Sanders surely must know why Obamacare in the South has almost entirely been rejected by white Republican state governments exploiting the racial divide in America by denying blacks and poor whites medical care. It almost seems as if the South cannot stand health provision for all, even when the costs to state governments are almost zero.Even when Obamacare would expand State Medicaid programs to expand health care for poor or near-poor whites, blacks, or those who are overwhelmed by huge medical bills.
The South has turned its back on the health of their own citizens and especially this poor white, blacks, and struggling hospitals precisely to prevent t the poor or the powerless to gain ground in health provision.
Bernie must surely know that his "single payer" mirage leaves the nation with no clue as to how he would overcome dug-in Congressional largess to the drug companies, the insurance companies, and the health insurance industry. Bernie's main purpose seems to be to exploit Hillary's reputation as "not trustworthy," as well as craven in her support of Wall Street and the health insurance industry.
The GOP never talks about the racial and class divides in our politics which the GOP constantly exploits, denying health care to millions and leaving our nation's health 37th among the 100 or so nations in the world. The world's oldest democracy can't shake its racist and class-riven past to deny protection all citizens, white or black.
Bernie and his young coalition can't bring us a "single payer" health care system, single-handedly. Moreover, Bernie is an Independent and "self-appointed" Democrat. If he somehow wins the Democratic nomination he will have a very hard time winning the support and activism of state Democratic parties.
In truth and in all realism, Bernie can't be elected president.
And while we're at it, why has the FBI dribbled out its investigation so as to make matters for Mrs. Clinton even worse?
Secretary of State Colin Powell used a personal computer at home and an official computer at the State Department. Why is the FBI investigating Hillary while ignoring Secretary Powell's tenure as Secretary of State? To all appearances, the FBI seems determined to swing a national election by leaving Hillary Clinton dangling.
As Bernie once said, "To hell with the damned emails!"
We all ought to say the same thing. Why hasn't President Obama called in the head of the FBI and simply asked, "What gives?" Isn't a sitting president allowed to inquire when we are to receive the long belated report and why it will come in the middle of a presidential election? Shades of J. Edgar Hoover!
