I've become a big Obama supporter. I haven't always been. I started
with Edwards, then moved to Hillary, and wound up with Obama as I
became increasingly attentive to what he said, and how skillfully he
was campaigning.
I remain convinced that he will make a fine president, maybe even a
very strong one. Lately, however, as he seeks to clarify a number of
positions (Iraq, FISA, using churches to deliver services, the death
penalty, gun control) he is getting whacked, from both sides for
"flip-flopping."
Attacking a candidate for flip-flopping is a
time-honored, well-tested Republican strategy. Republicans are
convinced that the majority of voters decide on the basis of character
and spend very little time educating themselves on the ins and outs of
policy. I think they are right, for better or worse.
