All my life I have walked. I think it started in grade school, in Tyler, Texas. Walking in those days was not about exercise. It was about necessity. There was no school bus, and we had only one car that Dad drove. So I walked to school. And back. Rain or shine.
I started walking about the time I started reading books. The magic of reading and falling into another world was so powerful for me. Life itself was being told to me. Somewhere along the line I made a discovery. Like reading, walking can be a kind of dreaming. Walking is a walking into another world, another tale that leads us on. And then I found that I could produce the trance of books just by walking through the neighborhood.
